Trevor Otis - Upper Elementary

Today at the farm we all went as one group. First we went out into the wheat field and picked some. Then we split into three groups one to do each job: threshing (rubbing the wheat to eat the grains out), winnowing (dropping the grains from one basket to another in front of a fan to get rid of the chaff), and grinding (which is exactly what it sounds like.) I liked grinding the best. After we did all that work we only had a tiny bit of flour. We got to taste the flour. I didn’t like it. It tasted like flour. Later we found out that’s 1,000 grains of wheat would only equal one teaspoon of flour.  Then we went back to class to make some focaccia (fo-cach-ia) with some dough Mrs. Susan had prepared. We split up into four groups to make it. In my group were Andre, Maddy, Alex, and me. There were four jobs: putting oil on the pan and before and after we put the dough on (Maddy), spreading the dough out on the pan (Andre), putting salt on the dough (Alex), and putting rosemary on the dough (me). After we finished preparing the dough we ate snack. Mrs. Susan brought some focaccia she had made for snack. Then we put the focaccia in the oven of City Grill (a restaurant near our school) and we went over a few at a time to check on it and the lobsters they had there. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that we’re making the focaccia for the Alabama All-star Food Festival our school will have a booth so please come check it out. The festival is on May 12th from 3-7 pm and it’s at Commerce St in downtown Montgomery.
